  • Cold Room Panels Designed for Temperature-Controlled Warehouses May 25, 2026
When I start do cold storage business many years ago, an old engineer tell me a very true thing. He say: "Refrigeration guys know compressor very well, but they do not understand wall. If you use wrong panel, the compressor will run to death!" He is so right. Choose cold room panel is not only about insulation, it is about your electric bill for many years.   First thing you must know is thermal conductivity. Very simple, lower number mean better insulation. PIR is the best, only 0.018 to 0.020. PU is normal choice, around 0.022 to 0.024. This small difference is huge money if your freezer run 24 hours everyday! PIR also have B1 fire rating. Rock wool is Class A1 non-combustible, fire cannot burn it. But thermal number is higher, so you must buy thicker panel. And EPS? It is only for dry warehouse with low budget and no fire risk. Thickness is decide by your room temperature. If panel too thin, your cooling machine will never rest and break down fast. If too thick, you waste money.   Here is my simple guide for you to choose thickness: Room Temperature Storage Type Recommended Thickness +5°C Normal Chiller / Veg & Fruit 75mm - 100mm -18°C to -20°C Frozen Meat / Ice Cream 120mm - 150mm (PIR is best) -40°C Deep Freeze / Blast Freezer 200mm   Outer steel skin is not just for hold the foam. It is a vapor barrier to stop water go inside the core. Wet insulation is garbage insulation! You must check the zinc coating. Z100 or Z150 is standard, but if your factory near sea water, please use Z275 to stop rust.   Also the joint system is super important. Good panel must use tongue-and-groove edge and strong cam lock. They pull the panel very tight together, so cold air cannot leak out at all. Keep the air inside, keep your money in pocket!
  • How to Ensure Airtight Installation for Cold Storage Rooms? Feb 05, 2026
Building a cold room is not the same as building a regular shed.   Before you start, make sure the ground is flat and clean. If the floor slab is uneven, panels won‘t fit right. Even small gaps let cold air out and warm air in. Mark your wall lines clearly. Don’t rush this step. If you do, the cold room will have problems fast.   When fitting panels, focus on the joints. Most leaks happen here. Seal the gaps fully with a good cold-temperature sealant. Don’t just put small spots of sealant. Run one solid line. If your panels have cam-locks, tighten them to pull edges together. For tongue-and-groove panels, put sealant inside the groove. The joint must be very tight.   Don’t forget holes for pipes or wires. Every hole can leak air. Seal these with closed-cell foam or flexible grommets made for cold. Don’t just stuff regular foam in. Check door seals too. Magnetic gaskets must touch fully. If you see light at the door edges, air is leaking.Choose your panels carefully. Not all insulation works the same. PIR panels repel moisture and keep working in damp places. EPS panels cost less but lose insulation if wet. For freezers below -20°C, get panels made for that cold. Use a supplier who knows this. Propanel (propaneltech.com) sells PU and PIR panels and helps you pick the right ones.   After installation, inspect every joint, corner, and hole. Use smoke tests to find leaks you can’t see. Don’t stop here. Cold rooms settle, seals wear out, and parts shift. Check regularly to fix small leaks early. This saves money and keeps your cold room working well.   An airtight cold room needs three things: good prep, careful fitting, and quality panels. Skip any of these and you waste energy and product. Take your time. Do it right. Work with experts. Your cold room and your wallet will thank you.
