  • How to Choose Cold Room Panels for Food Processing Plants Oct 28, 2026
    1. The Surface Material: Your First Line of Defense In food processing, demand stainless steel skins—never standard painted steel. Most modern facilities utilize 304 stainless steel for general production areas. Its smooth, non-porous finish easily withstands daily high-pressure washdowns. However, for high-risk zones or cleanrooms deploying aggressive sanitizers like vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP), upgrading to marine-grade 316L stainless steel is mandatory. While the initial investment is higher, 316L decisively resists the harsh chemical pitting and corrosion that would eat through standard 304 steel within a few years. The surface must remain flawlessly smooth, completely devoid of cracks or crevices where bacteria can hide. 2. The Insulation Core: Thermal Efficiency Meets Fire Safety For the vast majority of food plant cold rooms, Polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam is the undisputed smart choice. Premium PIR boasts an exceptionally low thermal conductivity of 0.018–0.020 W/m·K alongside a strict B1 fire rating. This delivers vastly superior insulation and significantly slower flame spread compared to standard PU foam. Whether you are storing frozen meat, deep-sea seafood, or ice cream at -18°C or below, PIR locks in temperature stability, preventing your heavy-duty compressors from burning out through non-stop operation. For specific fire-sensitive zones where local codes demand 100% non-combustible materials, high-density rock wool (Class A1) is the ultimate solution. Because rock wool insulates slightly less efficiently than PIR, panel thickness must be increased to achieve the target R-value. 3. Panel Thickness: Matching Specs to Operating Temperatures Panel thickness must be strictly calculated based on your target operational temperature: Chillers (+2°C to +5°C): 100mm thickness required. Standard Freezers (-18°C): 120mm to 150mm thickness required. Deep Blast Freezers (≤ -25°C): 150mm to 200mm thickness required. Under-specifying thickness guarantees a perpetual nightmare of surface condensation, ice buildup, and bleeding energy bills. Over-specifying simply wastes capital on unnecessary material. 4. Joint Integrity: Sealing Out Bacteria and Cold Loss Never overlook the panel joints. Cold air and microscopic bacteria will ruthlessly exploit any gap. Premium food-grade panels rely on deep, precision-milled tongue-and-groove edges. During installation, every single joint must receive a continuous, unbroken bead of specialized flexible sealant engineered to remain permanently pliable at sub-zero temperatures. The panel edges themselves must be fully protected during shipping and erection, as hidden dents and scratches inevitably transform into creeping rust spots and un-cleanable bacterial traps.
  • What are cold storage panels and why are they important? Mar 05, 2026
Cold storage panels are prefabricated materials made for keeping spaces cold. They have two strong outer layers with thick foam inside. The outside is usually steel or aluminum. The inside is foam that blocks heat. The panels fit tightly together with special edges and locks to stop air leaks. You should care because these panels save money. Without them, keeping things cold costs a lot. --First, they save energy. Cold rooms run compressors all day. If walls leak, compressors work harder and bills rise. Good panels have very low heat transfer. A 100mm panel works better than a thick regular wall. --Second, they protect your products. Food, medicine, and flowers need steady cold. These panels keep temperature steady and stop drafts and moisture. --Third, they last long. Steel outer layers resist damage and rust. Foam inside does not soak water or grow mold. Panels are modular, so you can move or add to your cold room later. --Fourth, they stay clean. Smooth surfaces have no cracks for germs. You can clean them with strong chemicals without damage. Some have extra germ protection. --Fifth, they install fast. Traditional building takes weeks. Panels go up in days. That means less downtime and faster profits.   Propanel (propaneltech.com) makes PU and PIR panels that work well in real use. They help you choose the right panel for your needs. Cold storage is not guesswork. Build it right the first time.
  • How to Ensure Airtight Installation for Cold Storage Rooms? Feb 05, 2026
Building a cold room is not the same as building a regular shed.   Before you start, make sure the ground is flat and clean. If the floor slab is uneven, panels won‘t fit right. Even small gaps let cold air out and warm air in. Mark your wall lines clearly. Don’t rush this step. If you do, the cold room will have problems fast.   When fitting panels, focus on the joints. Most leaks happen here. Seal the gaps fully with a good cold-temperature sealant. Don’t just put small spots of sealant. Run one solid line. If your panels have cam-locks, tighten them to pull edges together. For tongue-and-groove panels, put sealant inside the groove. The joint must be very tight.   Don’t forget holes for pipes or wires. Every hole can leak air. Seal these with closed-cell foam or flexible grommets made for cold. Don’t just stuff regular foam in. Check door seals too. Magnetic gaskets must touch fully. If you see light at the door edges, air is leaking.Choose your panels carefully. Not all insulation works the same. PIR panels repel moisture and keep working in damp places. EPS panels cost less but lose insulation if wet. For freezers below -20°C, get panels made for that cold. Use a supplier who knows this. Propanel (propaneltech.com) sells PU and PIR panels and helps you pick the right ones.   After installation, inspect every joint, corner, and hole. Use smoke tests to find leaks you can’t see. Don’t stop here. Cold rooms settle, seals wear out, and parts shift. Check regularly to fix small leaks early. This saves money and keeps your cold room working well.   An airtight cold room needs three things: good prep, careful fitting, and quality panels. Skip any of these and you waste energy and product. Take your time. Do it right. Work with experts. Your cold room and your wallet will thank you.
